Matthew Emeny – Buttons/Melania

Passionate About the Voice of the West Country

Originally from North Hampshire, Matthew has now found a home in North Somerset, and after a horrific year, a positive that has come of it, is the love for working and creating art locally. From his home in Bath, Matthew is an associate artist at the award-winning Natural Theatre Company, performing in immersive comedy and street performances across the UK and Europe. His independent work is produced under the banner of Calf 2 Cow and ranges from street theatre, horror, clowning, music and immersive children productions. He is also a producer with Producer Works, supporting new artists in the area.

Matthews’s work includes a commission from Coburg University in Germany to create a new street installation The Suitcase. His hard-hitting, horror show BackPAGE received mixed reviews, both hate and praise, with some calling for his work to be banned in Bath. The show was shortlisted for the Charlie Hartill award fund at the Pleasance Theatre London. His first show Footprints, opened at the Mission Theatre during the Bath Fringe, 2017, to a sold-out run “This is hard-hitting, gut-wrenching stuff, and their performances are faultless, the emotional truth shattering in its impact.”

Matthew created Father Christmas’s Workshop (2019), a family immersive musical experience taking place in an old shop that was converted into a performance space, engaging over 1000 audience members.

Recently Matthew was commissioned to join the Alternative Endings team for Wassail Theatre, telling stories all about Somerset that would otherwise be unknown, his contribution was inspired by the 328 local Bath residents that stopped a 5G tower being built, convinced COVID-19 was the tower’s Birth Child. During the summer of 2020 Matthew produced two Covid safe evenings of theatre in Bath, working with the theatre company, Three Inch Fools. They engaged 250 audience members and it was the first show in Bath to open after lockdown (Perhaps the Bath Royal will now finally employ him??). Currently, Matthew is going into production for a new web series, commissioned by Wiltshire Council, DHI charity and Natural Theatre company. Matthew was a part of the writing team and has a leading role in 5 episodes. 2021 will bring new Arts Council funded Street shows, Horror shows, Outdoor plays and hopefully a Christmas show for all the family.

It was a pleasure for Matthew to be a part of this Panto. Passionate about the voice of the west country, Matthew is devoted to telling stories and creating events for Somerset, celebrating all that is wonderful and all that is scary about the greatest place on earth!
